Common Framing Questions
Here are answers to questions we hear frequently from customers considering professional framing.
What’s the difference between professional framing and DIY framing?
Professional framing combines expertise with quality materials to protect and beautifully display your artwork. We use archival-quality, acid-free materials that won’t degrade over time. Our certified framers understand different artwork types – original paintings, photographs, textiles, documents – and apply appropriate conservation techniques. DIY framing typically uses off-the-shelf materials that may damage artwork through acid exposure or inadequate protection. With valuable or sentimental pieces, professional framing ensures preservation for generations.
How long does the framing process take?
Most custom framing projects take 2-4 weeks from consultation to completion. This timeline allows our framers to carefully source materials, craft your custom frame, and complete quality inspections. Rush options are available for an additional fee. The exact timeframe depends on frame complexity, material availability, and current workload. We’ll provide a specific timeline during your initial consultation based on your project requirements.
Do you frame all types of artwork?
Yes! We frame fine art including paintings and watercolors, photographs both vintage and modern, textiles and needlework, maps and documents, memorabilia and collectibles, and three-dimensional objects. Different artwork types require different conservation approaches. For example, we handle valuable paintings with techniques different from modern photo prints. During your consultation, discuss your specific artwork and we’ll recommend the appropriate preservation methods and materials.
What is archival framing and why does it matter?
Archival framing uses acid-free, lignin-free materials specifically chosen to preserve artwork without degradation over decades or centuries. Standard mat boards and mounting materials contain acids that cause yellowing and damage over time. Archival materials prevent color shift, fading, and deterioration. This approach is essential for valuable original artwork, treasured family photographs, and any piece you want to pass down to future generations. Museum-quality archival framing gives you peace of mind that your artwork is protected properly.
How much does custom framing cost?
Custom framing costs vary based on frame size, frame style selection, mat choices, and glass type. A simple 8×10 frame might start around $80-$150, while larger pieces or specialty materials cost more. We believe in transparent pricing – during consultation we discuss your artwork, preferences, and budget, then provide clear pricing before beginning work. Many customers find that the investment in professional framing is worthwhile given the protection and beauty it provides, especially for valuable or meaningful pieces. We work with various budgets and can recommend options at different price points.
